Trying to explain: I have organised a Portrait Group at the Ucheldre Centre for eight years. I do not teach at all as I find it difficult to be consistant with what I say to students when at the same time trying to move forward to improve my own technique. When people ask me what I paint I know that they mean - 'are you a landscape, or portrait or abstract painter'. I always answer that I paint ideas and leave it at that. It is very difficult to talk about painting, other than technique, because if I had a way with words I would write, as I haven't, I paint.
I am not interested in tonal painting or local colour. I leave that to photography. Nor would I ever use a photograph to assist me. I work outside and inside in equal measure but I have no interest in copying nature or commissions.
I think of myself as an abstract painter in that I select from reality and attempt to make it my own through colour, composition, and idea. Without an idea the technique has nowhere to go - with an idea I can work out the technique to express it. But to create Art it is necessary to keep the three main elements in balance, Idea - Colour - Composition. Each is as important as the other and if one is even only a little over emphasised then you lose the art.It is in the pursuit of the goal of finding the balance of the three elements in every painting that makes the task so difficult but a challenge I can not resist. |
